Using HDR software on a single RAW file

This is an interesting discovery. Well, ok, it’s not really a discovery as lots of people do it, but it’s still pretty cool. I’ve been using Photomatix, the HDR processing software on single RAW files and the result is pretty interesting. By tonemapping all the extended image data contained in a RAW file you’re able to bring back considerable detail into the shadows and highlights, much more so than just playing with the recovery and black sliders. Here’s a before and after example:
Here’s the Before (straight RAW conversion from a D90 NEF file):
And here’s the after result (Processed in Photomatix using tone mapping)
You can really see the difference in the water, and in the shadow areas of the grass. The water has much more oomph (that’s the technical term!) to it.
