Quick Fuji Focus Point Selection Tip

Quick Fuji Focus Point Selection Tip

Set the Function Button to Focus Point Selection

Here's a really quick tip for fellow Fuji X-Series shooters. Changing the focus points on a fuji camera can be a bit fiddly. You have to press the AF button on the back of the camera to activate focus point selection mode, and then use the d-pad on the back to select the focus point that you want to use. The problem with this method is that you really need two hands to do it, and I often find that I have to take my eye away from the viewfinder (although, yes you can still do it with your eye up with practice). There is however, another way!

You can assign focus point selection to the function button (the one beside the shutter button. The big advantage of assigning it to the function button is that you can now select focus points easily with one hand, as it's easy to press the fn button without even looking at it. It also makes it easy to change focus point selection without having to move your eye away from the viewfinder.

Here are instructions for setting the function button on an X-E1. There may be differences in the menus for other Fuji cameras but it should be something similar:

(Unfortunately you can't seem to be able to do this on the original X100)

  1. Press the menu button
  2. Navigate to (Camera) 3 on the menu
  3. Select the Function (FN) settings option
  4. Select the FN Button Option
  5. Set it to Focus Area
  6. Press Ok

That's pretty much all there is to it. Of course lots of people have different ways of working, so this method might not suit everyone, and some people are probably perfectly fine with the default setup, but I've found it really helpful in the way I shoot.
