I attempt a Street Photography Vlog
I really want to start doing more video and in particular I want to do a series of vlog style videos. I’ve been putting it off out of fear, and general procrastination, but yesterday I finally got around to making my first attempt. I won’t call it a resounding success because a lot of things didn’t exactly go according to plan, but it turned out reasonably well all things being equal. I consider this as a learning exercise, or a beta version if you will.
The idea was to film a piece to camera introducing the idea, and then film some first person shots of me shooting street photography, with little tips and observations thrown in. The second part of this will then be a screencast where I will post process the videos. It started off well, but then things started to go wrong. Most of this was poor planning on my part. First of all, I was shooting the video side of things on my hacked GH2, which gives great footage, but has a tendency to crash. Which it did. A lot. So then I started recording the video pieces on my iPhone, and for whatever reason (probably because it’s nearly full) , that started to crash too.
Then there’s the small but significant issue that I’m not particularly comfortable speaking to camera or even behind camera while out in public. I didn’t really have a plan either, and was just winging it. This was also a mistake, but then the initial idea was just to try the process out anyway. I even managed to screw up the end piece to camera, because the camera kept trying to autofocus on the background, which is a shame because it was nice light. I would have shot it again, but I figured that as this was a “beta” it would do. I was also getting tired of looking at myself. I was debating as to whether or not I would even post this video, but as I put the work in shooting and editing it, I thought that I might as well.
Despite everything that happened, it mostly came together pretty well. I don’t think it’s too bad for a first attempt. Most of what went wrong was a valuable lesson and I will make sure to take better preparations the next time. I got some nice shots too, and in the second part of this I will show the post production process. So if you have 7ish minutes to spare, give it watch and let me know if you think I should do more of these (only better of course). I did enjoy it and I think I can do a lot better in future too.
