Here’s just a quick image I was playing around with in Aperture 3. I really love the new extended range curves adjustment. I love it even more that you can add as many as you want and brush them in and out. Here’s an image from our heavy snow in January.

As you can see the sky is burnt out. I could just use the recovery slider or lower the exposure then use the shadow and highlights to compensate. If I was in lightroom I would probably use the gradient tool to bring the sky back in. But in Aperture 3 by using a curves tool, I can bring the sky back in and have fine control over the contrast and darkness of the sky. Once I have it right I can just brush it on the areas I want. Here’s the result.

I have more before and after images on my flickr site. You can check out my Aperture 3 testing set here. I’ll keep adding to it so remember to check back regularly.

I was playing around a bit more with Black and White techniques last night and got some nice results. I had taken these a few weeks ago while walking around my local town of Dundrum here in Dublin. There’s not that much around here. It’s a small village and apart from the shopping centre it’s really just a lot of houses. Still there’s always some nice details lurking around and black and white really works for some of these. When I eventually find a descent film lab in this country I hope to do some true film black and whites on my old Yashica manual camera.

Apple has finally added Aperture and iPhoto support for the Nikon D300s and a few other cameras including the Canon 7D. Considering the length of time the D300s in particular has been available it seems to have taken the company a long time to get Aperture support for the Camera, leading once again to frustration amongst users with Apple over the pace at which it adds new camera support. Other Cameras now supported in the update include the Eos 1D Mk IV, The Nikon D3s, The Nikon D3000, Canon G11 and the afore mentioned Canon 7D. Even if you’re not an Aperture user and you have one of these cameras (and a mac) you should download the update anyway, as it will add support to Preview and quicklook for their raw files.

Available now in your Software Update panel.
