A Year With The Nikon D90

Shortly before Christmas in 2008 I started a little experiment. You see, for the longest time I had been a Canon shooter. I had been solely using Canon cameras since the days of film but I had become increasingly frustrated with my camera of the time and the way Canon was developing its products (rebel after rebel but no mid range replacement). Still, I had a significant investment in Canon lenses and accessories so I didn’t want to jump ship and then regret it. Instead I decided to buy a mid range Nikon and try it out before making any decisions on what to do. You can read about my original thoughts on why I was doing this on this post on my technology blog. It’s now a little over a year since I first got my D90, so how has this little experiment played out? Read on to find out.

Photowalking in the Snow, In Black and White
Posted on 07. Jan, 2010 by Thomas in Blog, Photography
I finally braved the cold this afternoon and ventured out into the icy yonder. Actually, it’s not really that bad in the grand scheme of things, but we’re not really used to such cold here in Ireland, so it seems worse than it is. Still, it was a lovely afternoon (apart from the cold) so I wanted to get out and take some pictures of the local area. You couldn’t really go anywhere else anyway seen as the public transport was all over the place. Still, I got some nice Images. I decided to go with a black and white theme because I love the way the contrast between the snow and everything else looks in black and white. Enjoy…
Variations on a theme

I took this shot from my balcony yesterday, and while it’s pretty bland and not particularly well exposed (I’ve zereoed out the raw file in Lightroom, the original didn’t look quite this bad), I saw the potential in it.
Light and Dark in Dundrum
Posted on 24. Dec, 2009 by Thomas in Blog, Photography
I was playing around a bit more with Black and White techniques last night and got some nice results. I had taken these a few weeks ago while walking around my local town of Dundrum here in Dublin. There’s not that much around here. It’s a small village and apart from the shopping centre it’s really just a lot of houses. Still there’s always some nice details lurking around and black and white really works for some of these. When I eventually find a descent film lab in this country I hope to do some true film black and whites on my old Yashica manual camera.
